DFS Balances

When we look at the balance of what respondents have borrowed and saved in their DFS accounts (not including airtime), we see interesting differences between the groups and gender.

The treatment group has a higher balance than the control group, and males have a higher balance than females. For interview 4 this was exactly the other way around, so we think that this metric is just very volatile. It could very well be that what people save and loan in between each interview varies wildly.

  • When asked what they learned about saving/spending, most respondents said they didn't learn anything new. They also said they learned about saving in general, and that the more they save, the more they can loan.

  • Most respondents report having no trouble with DFS, but a small percentage cites Network problems / delays.

  • When asked what they'd like to learn, many respondents say they would like to learn about another DFS than the one they're using.

He has to ask for a phone from a friend in order to do any transaction., I dint know that airtel money reverses after 7 days and so it dint succeed, I had an emergency and I wanted to use my savings in lock account but i had to wait for 2 days to get my money, I have not managed open Mshwari, Incase of wrong number transactions and safaricom is notified immediately, the wrong transaction number can be withheld so that no transactions can be made from it until reverse is done, It takes a long channel to get money at hand eg from bank to his mpesa account and then to the agent before getting the money, Sometimes he can forget what he spends his money on. Followup to DFS19: DFS20: Explain why, give reasons and a description.

DFS20: Explain why, give reasons and a description.: -Because with dfs they wait until the agreed time for repayment collapse while individuals ask for their money any time anywhere especially if they see you shopping nice things even before the agreed time collapse, -Individual harass people with their debt -Individual give a short period of time for refunding and if you fail, its war -Individuals charge higher rates, An individual will stress you when they want back their money. They may also be broke, but I can always get money from DFS, Because individuals are flexible on their teams and conditions and repayment period can be extended on an agreement., Because individuals will understand him incase he defaults, Being able to qualify for high loan limits when you save through digital ficial services and their services are flexible and fast, DFS gives a specific duration of loan repayment and charges an interest depending on the amount borrowed., Dfs is better because I fear everytime I see someone I owe but with dfs I can pay slowly by slowly untill I finish unlike with people ,they expect the wholesome, DFS is more confidential and their charging rates are standard., For DFS, especially mshwari, he has to find an mpesa to withdraw the money. He has a chama with some few friends who when one is in a fix, they usually sort each other out., Friends can fail you sometimes, maybe they don't have the cash. Mshwari won't fail you, they will always have the cash, He cannot easily mingle with people and does not like borrowing money from people but most of the time from ASCA., He can explain himself in case he fail to pay a loan in time. With DFS he cannot explain himself to anyone other than repaying the loan in the specified time or incurring an extra charge. or He won't have to pay with interest. It doesn't have a specific duration in which he can do the repayment. he can negotiate with an individual as opposed to a bank or OTHER DFS where he has to pay in the specified time irrespective of where the money is to be gotten from.

Rate the following statement: Women save more than men

Perhaps not surprisingly, they way respondents answer this question differs greatly by gender. Women are much more likely to agree with this statement than men. When asked why, we see reasons along the lines of  'women are in chamas, to which they have to contribute', 'men need to spend more, so it's easier to save for women', and 'men are spenders unlike women'.

DFS23: Please explain rating your answer to DFS22 (Rate the following statement: Women save more than men)

DFS23: Please explain rating:: Because if women set their minds on purchasing something they will save on it till they reach their goals., Because men are the breadwinners of their families and a role model and therefore they must provide, It is mostly like that because many women have less responsibilities, Most are obliged to make contributions to chamas, therefore they have to work towards attaining the particular amount required when time for chama comes., Men spend on everything, women like lying alot to get money and they save all the money, you even leave the, money for food and they will still manage to save some., Men like to spend money either by paying school fees, rent and providing family basic needs unlike women who mostly spend money on fashion and save the rest for chama groups., Women don't have a lot of expenses compared to men, Women face most problems affecting family members hence they save for future use incase of emergency., Women have alot of impulse buying compared to men, Women have different uses but men spend more on buying stuff like food because especially for bachelors they tend to buy ready foods rather than cooking for themselves, Women budget for basic needs for the family and tend to save extra cash for future expenditure., Most women belongs to women groups where they save money for future expenditure., Most women are in chamas where they are obliged to contribute a certain amount periodically. This makes them having to work in all ways possible to make sure they manage to get the required amount, Men can easily give, Men are meant to take care of the women and this is what makes many women always dependant to receive and complain toomuch too .I think is is just nature, Men are spenders unlike women or Men can drink their money. Women are strict with their chamas. Men also have more responsibility. They also eat in restaurants, women economise the little money they get or given by their husband.

DFS25: Please explain rating:: Because borrowing money depends with the situation at hand and therefore any gender can borrow, Because men can due with their problems but not borrowing like women, Because they are bread winners and therefore should always provide, Because women like borrowing even if they have the money, I think it's the women who borrow more so they can sustain their families whenever there are needs, Men borrow more than women inoder to pay school fees, rent and make sure their families live a comfortable life., Men borrow more than women inoder to provide ficial assistance to his family on daily basis., Men doesn't like requesting for loans, if need be, most ask their wives to take a loan on their behalf., Men fear debts compared to women, Men feel ashamed to borrow and whenever need arise they request their wives to go and borrow on their behalf., Men usually hustle to earn before spending, they don't like borrowing what they are intending to spend and would rather ask their wives to request for the loan on their behalf if they need to get a loan., Men perfer saving than borrowing inoder to provide ficial assistance for the family in future., Men perfer borrowing inoder to provide ficial assistance to all family members., Most ladies are on ASCA/ROSCA chamas that offer soft loans, they are therefore in a position to access loans as compared to their male counterparts who also like to operate independently as far as money is concerned., To spend on pleasure activities like drinking and betting, Women access loans from the chamas in which they are(mostly) members, they don't require long and strict procedures to access loans., They have more responsibilities when compared to women like paying rent, They have a lot of responsibilities and have more focus on developement projects that calls for need of more money from loans or They have a lot of responsibilities eg providing food, house rent, health and even supporting the family of the wife
